Can you create your own character?

Yes. The official page identifies the hero as a customizable character and says players join the story as a new protagonist. This is no longer an expectation based only on A.O.T. 2.

Confirmed customization items

The Digital Deluxe Edition lists seven creator items: Everyday Outfit, Goth, Geek, Goth Hair, three Goth Earrings, a Goth Choker and Geek Glasses. Digital preorders add Wings of Freedom Earrings, and early purchasers can receive a Wings of Freedom Hoodie.

Changing ally outfits

Digital Deluxe includes Everyday Eren, Goth Mikasa and Geek Armin outfits. Koei Tecmo says ally appearances can be changed by examining the mirror in the Workshop or the player's room and selecting “Change ally appearance.”

Your role in the story

The custom protagonist joins the Scout Regiment and experiences major events from the beginning of the story through the finale. Regimental HQ lets the protagonist interact with familiar characters, assemble a squad and encounter new story developments.

The protagonist's official background

Koei Tecmo's Japanese character page now gives the hero a fixed biography. Before joining the Scouts, the protagonist worked in a workshop in the Underground. Their technical ability caught the Scout Regiment's attention and led to recruitment.

Growing up in the enclosed Underground left the protagonist with a strong longing for the world beyond the Walls. After an unspecified event, they go on to instruct the 104th Cadet Corps. The profile also says they have known Levi and Hange for a long time.

Director Hayato Iwata adds that this protagonist is older than the previous game’s hero and belongs to a generation closer to Levi and Hange. Their mechanical-engineering expertise is reflected in the ability to combine, upgrade and modify detailed ODM gear parts, while their senior position leads naturally into managing a squad.

What customization does not confirm yet

Character creation is official, but it does not by itself confirm that this hero is the returning Nameless Hero from A.O.T. 2. Koei Tecmo has not announced story continuity based on old save data, branching dialogue, romance, the full depth of friendships or whether creator choices change later scenes.

Those are among the strongest open requests in our community wishlist research. Until the story system is explained, they remain requests rather than features.

What is not detailed yet?

The official material has not yet provided a complete list of face, hair, body, voice and name options, nor has it explained whether creator choices affect statistics. The custom character cannot be used online because the developers confirmed that this entry omits multiplayer elements.

Community question: how many hairstyles and hair colors?

Players are specifically asking for more original hairstyles, textured and POC hair options, red hair colors and stronger face presets. Those requests recur across comments in an August 31 AOT3 hairstyle discussion.
