Do You Need to Play Attack on Titan 1 and 2 Before AOT3?

No. Development producer Hideo Suzuki says you do not need the previous games, manga or anime to understand A.O.T. 3's full story.

Attack on Titan 3 new player story guide
Short answer: you can start with A.O.T. 3

Suzuki directly says the game was built so players who have not played the earlier titles can understand the entire story. It does not mean every old mission, mechanic or scene is copied into the new game.

Why A.O.T. 3 works as a starting point

The official description calls Attack on Titan 3 the culmination of the game series and says it lets players experience the story from its beginning to its conclusion. Memorable scenes from previous titles have been rebuilt, while brand-new story developments and battles against the Nine Titans are also advertised.

For a newcomer, the important part is the story scope: A.O.T. 3 does not begin after an unexplained A.O.T. 2 ending. It returns to the beginning of the Attack on Titan narrative and follows it through the finale. Our story and campaign guide tracks what that official promise confirms and what mission details remain unknown.

Why players are asking

The question appeared again in a September 2026 Reddit discussion from a newer fan. It also appeared independently under an earlier gameplay reveal discussion. Those threads demonstrate that players want a clear entry-order answer; community replies are not the source for the game facts on this page.

What playing the earlier games can still add

Playing A.O.T. or A.O.T. 2 can give you context for how Omega Force previously handled ODM combat, character bonds and earlier story arcs. It can also help you judge how much has been rebuilt. None of that is required by the current A.O.T. 3 product listing.

The A.O.T. 2 save-data bonus

Koei Tecmo confirms an additional in-game bonus for players with Attack on Titan 2 or Attack on Titan 2: Final Battle save data stored on the same system used for A.O.T. 3. The reward details have not been announced.

This is a bonus, not a stated story requirement. Koei Tecmo has not announced imported progression, character builds, dialogue choices or a transferred campaign save. Do not buy an older game solely for a reward until the publisher explains what the reward contains.
